Réunis à Porto-Novo du 19 au 22 octobre pour leur première session plénière ordinaire de l'année pastorale 2025-2026, les évêques du Bénin ont lancé un appel à la paix, au dialogue et à la responsabilité, à quelques mois des élections générales de 2026.

Présidée par Mgr Roger Houngbédji, archevêque de Cotonou, la rencontre de la Conférence Épiscopale du Bénin (CEB) s'est ouverte par une messe solennelle à la cathédrale Notre-Dame de l'Immaculée Conception de Porto-Novo, en présence d'autorités religieuses, civiles et militaires ainsi que de nombreux fidèles.

Face aux tensions qui s'installent dans le climat socio-politique, les évêques appellent les acteurs politiques, la société civile et les citoyens à faire preuve de discernement et de respect mutuel.
Ils exhortent à la tenue d'élections « libres, transparentes et inclusives », reflet de la maturité démocratique du peuple béninois.

« L'Église n'apporte pas de solution politique, mais rappelle les valeurs essentielles de justice, de paix et d'unité », ont-ils souligné dans leur déclaration.

Des questions pastorales et sociales débattues

Les travaux ont également porté sur des sujets spirituels et sociaux. Les évêques ont insisté sur la Journée mondiale des missions autour du thème « Missionnaires de l'espérance parmi les peuples », invitant les chrétiens à être témoins de foi et d'espérance.

Ils ont exprimé leur joie pour la nomination de Mgr Éric Soviguidi comme Nonce apostolique auprès du Burkina Faso et du Niger. Son ordination épiscopale est prévue le 15 novembre prochain à la paroisse Sacré-Cœur d'Akpakpa.

La CEB a aussi rendu hommage à Mgr Victor Agbanou (Lokossa) et Mgr Fidèle Agbatchi (Parakou), saluant leur vie consacrée et leur retraite « paisible et féconde ».
